I failed with 8 businesses before discovering freelancing. The dirty little secret about business is that I was destined to fail.
There are a lot of shiny, amazing looking opportunities out there. You might think you need to sell a course, become an affiliate, run an agency, sell on Amazon, or 100 other things. On the surface, these businesses may seem so simple. But when you look deeper, you realize they are more complicated than you could imagine… which destroys your chances of success. Sure, you can watch a Youtube video from someone telling you how easy it is, but that is very unlikely.
I recently read a book called Freakonomics. One of the most memorable stories was about a young PhD student of Sociology. He was studying poverty and drug addiction, which led him to a ghetto area of Chicago in the 80s.
The local crack gang held him at gunpoint the first night, but they became friends. He soon learned everything about them. He even got their accounting records!
He learned that the guys selling crack on the corner only made a couple hundred dollars per month. And even worse… their chances of dying were 1 out of 6. Why would they risk their life for a few hundred bucks? Why would anyone do that?
The answer was one word: hope.
The boss of each local gang could make $100-200,000 per year, and everybody knew it. That guy was the only example of success many of them had ever seen. So they followed the blueprint given to them.
Their bosses had bosses too. Those were the big dogs. They made $500,000 – $1 million per year. Tax free.
But the odds were against them. Their chances of becoming a local boss were about 1 out of 1,000. So out of 1000 people who “went for it” about 165 would die. Way more would go to prison. And only 1 would become a local boss…
And they would still go to prison before long. It was inevitable.
So these unfortunate gang members were playing the lottery with their lives. “Sure, I’ll probably lose everything, but there is a chance I could hit it big.”
Most of the business opportunities you hear about today work a lot like the crack gangs. They are just selling hope. But all the pieces of the puzzle have to be in place to make it work. Otherwise, the only thing certain is poverty and death. There is almost zero chance it will work. There are too many things that can go wrong.
If every aspiring entrepreneur understood this, their lives would be a lot different. How many bankruptcies could have been avoided? How many families would still be together?
Freelancing is different. It’s like jobs 2.0. Can you make money with a job? Sure, almost anyone can. Then you can make money as a freelancer.
There is no gamble with freelancing. You will make money. 100% of everyone that does it makes money. And if you can work smart and learn, $100,000 per year is not difficult at all. It is way easier than getting a job that pays that much. And way easier than creating a successful business.
With freelancing, you definitely don’t have to understand every part of a business to have success.
You get to focus on one part of your client’s business, and learn how to make that succeed. Your only job is to help your client reach their goal. That focus makes the game way easier for you, and drives your chances of success up.
Having only ONE goal to pursue, and doing the same thing for many clients, makes your job simple. And in this case, simple means POSSIBLE.
